Country Christmas Decorating Ideas for a Rustic Home

The country style isn’t usually my favorite in decor but it’s what I gravitate towards when it comes to the actual holidays. It is just so traditional and I like to collect heirloom pieces. A lot of the styles that you saw in 2011, and 2012 will still be popular in 2013 & 2014. It uses classic color palettes like red, green, and ivory. If you like to hold onto your decorations for awhile this is a good style for you. Here is a roundup of some ideas with pictures on how to set the perfect holiday table and find the perfect tree.

Rustic Decorating Ideas for Stockings and Tree Skirts

This is the mot masculine of the country look and the color palette is a little different too. Instead of a bright white it uses more of a taupe or natural color. It also uses a muted burgundy and a darker green instead of brighter white, reds, and greens.

The more modern take on this uses a lot of burlap and sack cloth. This is the most popular material for 2013 in any style.

There are a lot of natural elements in this style too. Typically this would be moose and elk appliques on everything. However, a more elegant approach is with an actual element from nature like pinecones or faux apples for an understated look.

Rusty tree ornaments or stars are also an essential motif. You could even buy a large version for your wall that you can use year round.

The Xmas Mantel

This style usually has lots of accessories and the mantel is really the focal point of the entire room. Mantle scarves can showcase lace or burlap. Look for unusual rustic garlands like jingle bells or fabric scraps. If you do use artificial greenery go for a frosted look and spend a little bit more money so it’s as realistic looking as possible with longer needles and pine cone accents.

Traditionally this would have a Christmas village on it and this is a fun tradition where you can collect a new piece every single year the way that my family does. This can be a sentimental craft project (we paint ours). If buying it new look then for a complete set and almost any style will work with this theme.

These are the items you may own the longest so I like to see more traditional versions here. The most obvious idea would be a quilted or an applique version but I like to see slightly fancier fabrics. A burlap is still rustic. Velvet is so traditional that it will last for years. You can always use a more whimsical hanger like a candy cane although these can be dangerous around kids.

For the tree skirt look for more elegant items. It can still be quilted but it may not have a lot of different pieces to it and it may focus on texture. You could also be inspired by a natural element such as a poinsettia.

For Outside

The outdoor holiday decor for this style is usually the cheapest and the simplest to install. Plus, most aspects of it look just as great during the daytime as at night. If you hate putting up holiday lights then consider this style. If you do use them it should just be a basic white version or a vintage style string light.

Of course, you will still need some illumination at night so try mesh deer that can even be solar powered. Also decorate with lots of pine boughs. One of my favorite lighting tricks is to hang a matching wreath or snowflake in each interior window although check for safety if you close your curtains and blinds over this. If you like primitive decor like flags and pine boughs this is a fun decorating choice. However, instead of making a lot of small statements, use the same element over and over like several of the same flags lining a walkway. Add in larger pieces like a topiary too.

For the Table

For the perfect holiday table look for traditional tree motif china. While this is expensive and a pain to store it really sets the stage. The rest of the decorations can be more neutral which is easier for your wallet and for storage. You can use some of them year round like a burlap runner, toile napkins, and an iron centerpiece. The rustic style to me has so much warmth in it and will work with almost any style of architecture.
